Boosting your Child’s Confidence

Learning to swim can build confidence in anyone, but especially kids! It’s a skill that has to be taught, and once they understand the endless possibilities of what they can do in the water their confidence will go through the roof! Today we’re going to explore the different ways swim lessons can increase your child’s self-confidence.

Improved Body Awareness

When children take their first lesson they’re usually clueless about how moving their bodies can help them get through the water independently. As they practice and progress, they begin to realize what they’re capable of. It’s truly magical to witness and one of my favorite aspects of teaching!

I teach them to understand the position of their bodies in the water. This can translate to other areas of life, such as sports and physical activities.

Developing Physical Strength

Swimming is a full-body workout that can help everyone develop physical strength, coordination, and endurance. It takes a lot to not only move your entire body across the water but also hold your breath at the same time.

Practicing holding their breath over time will strengthen their lung capacity, making other activities out of the water easier! As they progress and refine their technique, they can experience a boost in self-confidence in and out of the water.

Social Interaction

Group swim lessons provide opportunities for social interaction and camaraderie, as children share their experiences and learn from one another. Whether they take their lesson before or after a friend or learn in a group setting, lessons around others can help in many ways!

This can contribute to improved self-esteem, especially for those who may feel isolated or struggle with social anxiety.

Setting Goals

Setting goals is an important component of swim lessons. I help my students set goals gradually, such as reaching for a toy on the stairs, the floor, then the deep end, etc.

We slowly work towards achieving each goal, and I always check in and give them praise when they accomplish steps - big or small. This can help build confidence as they pass benchmarks on their way to reaching their goals!

Independence

Whether you take one-on-one or group classes, your child will learn how to swim independently. I gradually give them more space to swim as they improve, and always remind them to look at how far they swam by themselves!

Swim lessons can help children build independence by allowing them to make decisions and take responsibility for their actions. This can translate to other areas of life, such as decision-making and problem-solving!

In summary, remember that swim lessons can help children develop independence and self-awareness, which can translate to other areas of life. I adore seeing my students start timid and scared and later on beam with confidence every time they start their lesson. Check my calendar below so you can experience the same!
